How do reviews affect rankings?

Updated 2 min readBy Pop & Soda
Short answer

Reviews mainly affect where you show in Google's local map results. Google says review count and rating feed into prominence, one of its three local ranking factors alongside relevance and distance. Recent, detailed reviews that mention your services help most. Say a florist gets 10 new reviews a month that mention wedding flowers: that steady flow signals an active, trusted business for those searches.

Reviews matter most on the map

Google ranks local results on three things: relevance (does the business match the search), distance (how close it is) and prominence (how well known and trusted it is). Google states that review count and rating are part of prominence. That is one reason two similar cafés on the same street can rank very differently in the map pack, the block of businesses shown with a map.

In regular web results, Google reviews are not a direct ranking factor. They still help indirectly, because star ratings and real customer words make your listing more clickable and believable.

Recency, detail and replies all count

A pile of five-year-old reviews tells searchers little. These are the qualities that help.

  • A steady flow of new reviews, not a burst followed by nothing
  • Reviews that mention the service, product or neighborhood in the customer's own words
  • Owner replies to good and bad reviews, which show the business is active
  • A rating that looks real: a few honest 4-star reviews read as more believable than a perfect wall of 5s

Reviews on other sites shape AI answers too

When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for the best med spa or florist nearby, the answer often draws on review sites and directory listings. Consistent, positive reviews on Google, Yelp and industry sites make it more likely your business is the one named.

Ask every customer, the right way

Never buy reviews or offer rewards for positive ones. Do not filter who you ask either, a practice called review gating. Google's policies forbid both and can remove reviews or restrict your listing. Instead, ask everyone at the right moment with a direct link.

  1. 01

Copy your review link from your Google Business Profile.

  2. 02

Send it by text or email within a day of the visit or delivery.

  3. 03

Add it to receipts, follow-up emails and a small card at checkout.

  4. 04

Reply to every review within a few days.

Follow-up questions

Do negative reviews hurt my rankings?

A few negative reviews among many positive ones rarely hurt and can make your profile look real. A calm, helpful reply matters more to readers than the review itself.

Should I ask customers to use certain keywords?

No. Scripting what customers say breaks Google's review policies and reads as fake. Asking about a specific service, such as how was your wedding order, naturally leads to more detailed reviews.
