How do you track phone calls from your website?

Updated 2 min readBy Pop & Soda
Short answer

Track phone calls in two layers. First, record every tap on your click-to-call link as a key event in Google Analytics 4. Then add a call tracking service with dynamic number insertion, which shows visitors from each channel a different number so you know which channel drove each call and whether it connected. A med spa getting 40 calls a month can then see which ones came from Google Ads and which became bookings.

Start by tracking taps on your phone number

Most website calls start with a tap on a mobile screen, and you can count those for free.

  1. 01

Make every phone number on your site a tap-to-call link that begins with tel:.

  2. 02

In Google Tag Manager, create a trigger for link clicks where the click URL starts with tel:.

  3. 03

Send a GA4 event, for example phone_click, from that trigger.

  4. 04

In GA4, mark phone_click as a key event, the name GA4 now uses for conversions.

  5. 05

Test it on your phone and confirm the event appears in GA4's real-time report.

Add call tracking to count real calls

A tap is not a call. People hang up, or they dial your number by hand from a desktop screen, which a tap event misses entirely. Call tracking closes that gap.

With dynamic number insertion, a script swaps the number on your site based on how each visitor arrived. Calls to each number are logged with the source, duration and time, and some services record calls if you choose. CallRail, CallTrackingMetrics and WhatConverts are common providers. For Google Ads, Google's own call conversion tracking can also count calls from ads.

Count qualified calls, not rings

Not every call is a lead. Set a minimum duration, such as 60 seconds, as a rule of thumb for a real conversation, and tag outcomes like booked, quote sent or wrong number. Then send qualified calls back to Google Ads or your CRM so you optimize for customers rather than dials.

Follow-up questions

Will tracking numbers hurt my local SEO?

Not if your real number stays the same in your listings and site schema. Dynamic numbers swap only for website visitors, and if you use a tracking number on your Google Business Profile, keep your main number listed as an additional number.

Do I need to tell callers they are being recorded?

If you record calls, usually yes. Consent laws vary by state and country, so play a short recording notice at the start of every call to be safe.
