How collection and category pages rank on Shopify

For Shopify and DTC brands whose collections are just a heading and a grid of products. After reading, you can turn collections into pages that rank for the broad shopping searches.

Collection pages usually rank for broad shopping searches like 'linen bedding' or 'dog harness', while product pages win specific ones. To make a Shopify collection rank, give it a clear title and URL handle, add 150 to 300 words of genuinely useful copy, keep its products relevant, and control the duplicate URLs that tags and filters create. Say a home goods store's 'Linen Bedding' collection gets 900 impressions a month at position 14: better copy and links can move it onto page one.

Collections target the searches shoppers type first

Collections, also called category pages, match the first, broad searches shoppers make. Someone typing 'gold hoop earrings' wants to see options, so Google often ranks collection pages and marketplace categories for that kind of search rather than a single product.

That makes collections some of the most valuable pages on a store. They target bigger searches than single products, and they stay live while individual products sell out and change. Treat each important collection as a landing page, not just a filter.

Start with the basics in Shopify's collection editor. The URL handle, the short name at the end of the address, should match the search: /collections/linen-bedding rather than /collections/new-collection-2. The collection title becomes the main heading, so make it the phrase shoppers use, not an internal name like 'Spring Drop'. Choose a sort order that puts in-stock best sellers first.

Write copy that helps shoppers choose

Collection copy should help someone choose, not repeat the keyword. Put a short intro of one to three sentences above the product grid so shoppers reach products fast. Add a longer buying guide below the grid, where it helps without pushing products down.

Good collection copy explains differences that matter: materials, sizes, fits, care, who each option suits and how to pick. Link to a few related collections and best-selling products in the text. Then set a custom title and meta description in the collection's search engine listing settings, because Shopify's default often just repeats the collection name.

Know how Shopify handles duplicate URLs

Shopify can show the same product at more than one address. A product may load at /products/linen-sheet and also at /collections/bedding/products/linen-sheet. Shopify adds a canonical tag, a line of code that tells Google which version is the main one, pointing to the /products/ address. That handles most of the risk.

You can go further. Many themes can be set to link product cards straight to the /products/ address, which keeps internal links clean. Tag pages and filter combinations create many extra URLs too. Shopify generates a sitemap and a default robots.txt for you, and the default already blocks some sorted and filtered URLs. You can edit robots.txt through a theme file called robots.txt.liquid, but change it carefully.

Build a collection structure that mirrors how people search

Create collections for the searches that have real demand, and skip the ones that do not. If people search 'linen duvet covers' and 'linen sheets' separately, each deserves its own collection, linked from a parent 'Linen Bedding' collection. Avoid near-empty collections with two or three products; they look thin to Google and to shoppers.

Keep seasonal collections at the same URL every year, such as /collections/gifts-for-her, and update the products. The page keeps the links and history it built last season. Kids2, an educational toy company and popsoda client, gained 30 new first-page keywords and 75% more organic traffic in six months, and clear category pages are a core part of that kind of growth.

Questions people ask

Will copy below the product grid still count?

Yes. Google reads the whole page. Putting the longer guide below the grid keeps products easy to reach for shoppers while still giving Google context.

Should I change a collection's URL handle?

Only if it is badly wrong, because changing it creates a new address. If you do, Shopify can create a redirect from the old URL; make sure that box is ticked.

Do tag pages hurt my SEO?

They can create many thin, overlapping pages. Use tags for filtering, and build proper collections for the searches you want to rank for.
