What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO gets your pages ranked in search results, while AEO shapes those pages so search engines and voice assistants use your content as the direct answer. SEO covers the whole site: technical health, content, links and local listings. AEO works inside that, on question-led pages. A med spa needs SEO to rank for Botox near me and AEO to own the answer to how long Botox lasts.
SEO is the foundation, AEO is a layer on top
SEO, search engine optimization, is everything that helps Google find, understand and rank your pages: speed and crawling, page content, internal links, links from other sites, reviews and your Google Business Profile. AEO, answer engine optimization, focuses on one outcome inside search: being the quoted answer in a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box or a voice reply.
Because answer boxes usually come from pages that already rank, AEO without SEO rarely works.
They differ in goal, scope and measurement
- Goal: SEO aims for a high position, AEO aims for the answer spot
- Scope: SEO works on whole pages and the site, AEO works on individual questions and answer blocks
- Searches: SEO covers every kind, AEO focuses on question searches
- Formats: AEO leans on 40 to 60 word answers, step lists, tables and FAQ structure
- Measurement: SEO tracks rankings, traffic and leads, AEO tracks answer boxes won across a list of questions
Start with whichever gap is bigger
If your site has technical problems or ranks for very little, start with SEO. If you already rank on page one for questions buyers ask but someone else owns the answer box, AEO is the quicker win. Most businesses do both at once on their key pages.
Sites that publish lots of question-led content are where the two overlap most. Parent.co, a parenting media site built on answering parents' questions, grew organic search traffic 65% in six months.
GEO is the third piece
GEO, generative engine optimization, is about getting named and cited in AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Perplexity. Clear answers and consistent facts carry over from SEO and AEO, but GEO also depends heavily on how other sites mention you.

Follow-up questions
Do I need separate teams for AEO and SEO?
No. AEO is a specialized part of SEO, so the same team should handle both on the same pages.
Is SEO dead because of AI answers?
No. Answer boxes and AI answers draw on pages that search engines can find, understand and trust, so SEO remains the base that AEO and GEO build on.
