What is the difference between a featured snippet and an AI Overview?
A featured snippet quotes one web page word for word in a box near the top of Google, with a single source link. An AI Overview is a summary Google writes with its Gemini models, drawing on several pages and linking to multiple sources. A skincare brand can win the snippet with one clear 50-word answer, while an AI Overview might cite that same page alongside four or five other sites.
One quotes, the other summarizes
The featured snippet is extractive: Google lifts a passage, list or table from one page and credits it, so your exact words appear. The AI Overview is generative: Google's AI writes a new answer, then links to pages that support it. Your words may be paraphrased, and you share the space with other sources.
- Source: a snippet uses one page, an AI Overview draws on several
- Wording: a snippet quotes you, an AI Overview paraphrases
- Links: a snippet has one prominent link, an AI Overview shows several source links
- Stability: both change, but AI Overview wording can shift from one search to the next
Which one shows depends on the search
Snippets tend to appear for direct questions with a short, settled answer. AI Overviews tend to appear for questions that combine several points, such as comparisons, planning and multi-part questions. Some searches show both, some one, some neither. Google keeps adjusting coverage, so check your own target searches rather than relying on general rules.
The same work helps you win both
Both lean on pages Google already understands and trusts, so the habits overlap.
- Put a clear, direct answer right under a question heading
- Use lists and tables where the content is a process or comparison
- Keep facts specific, consistent and dated
- Earn mentions and links from other trusted sites
Measure them differently
On a given day, a snippet is either yours or not, so track it as wins across a list of questions. AI Overview citations vary between runs, so check each target search several times and record how often you are cited, as a rate rather than a yes or no.

Follow-up questions
Can I opt out of AI Overviews but keep the snippet?
Not separately. The nosnippet controls that limit snippets also limit AI Overviews, and Google-Extended does not control Search features. Blocking usually costs more visibility than it saves.
Have AI Overviews replaced featured snippets?
Not fully. Google still shows featured snippets on many searches, and the two can appear on the same results page.
