In one paragraph

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is shaping your pages so search engines can lift a clean answer from them into a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box or a voice reply. It pays off most for businesses whose customers ask questions before they buy: clinics, med spas, skincare brands, software tools. Say a med spa answers 'how long does Botox last' in two clear sentences and wins the box for a question searched 2,000 times a month: that is a top-of-page slot no ad can hold.

AEO means writing for the answer box above the usual results

AEO is about the answer formats that sit on top of or between the normal list of links. An answer engine is any system that replies to a question directly instead of just listing pages. Google is the biggest one, and voice assistants on phones and smart speakers work the same way.

The formats this guide covers are the featured snippet (a quoted block from one page, shown near the top), People Also Ask (a stack of related questions that expand to show short answers) and voice answers (the one reply an assistant reads aloud). Each one quotes a specific page and usually links to it. AEO is the practice of making your page the easiest one to quote.

AEO sits between SEO and GEO, and the same habits help all three

AEO overlaps with two neighbors, and it helps to keep them apart. SEO (search engine optimization) is the work of getting your pages to rank in search results and on the map. AEO is the work of getting a ranking page quoted in a fixed answer slot. GEO (generative engine optimization) is the work of getting your business named and cited in AI-written answers from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity.

In practice the habits are shared. A page that answers a question clearly in its first lines, uses headings that match real questions, and keeps facts accurate tends to do better in all three. That is why AEO is rarely a separate project. It is a way of writing that you apply to pages you already have.

It pays off most where customers ask before they buy

AEO is worth the most when your buyers research with questions. If people type 'how' or 'what' or 'is it safe to' before they choose you, answer boxes are where your first impression happens.

Content-led businesses feel this most. popsoda's work with Parent.co, a parenting media site built on answers to everyday questions, grew its organic search traffic 65% in six months.

  • Strong fit: med spas and clinics (treatment, recovery and cost questions), skincare and supplement brands (ingredient questions), B2B and SaaS startups (how-to and comparison questions), pet and home goods brands (care and use questions).
  • Moderate fit: cafés, restaurants, florists and local shops, where most wins come from local and voice questions like hours and services.
  • Weak fit: searches for your own brand name and pure buying searches like 'buy linen sheets', where shopping results and product listings take the space.

Be honest about the click trade-off

An answer box can satisfy a searcher without a click, so judge AEO on more than traffic. When a question has a short, complete answer, some people will read it and leave. People call these zero-click searches.

That is still useful. Your name sits at the top of the page, which builds familiarity. Questions that need more than two sentences, like costs, comparisons and step-by-step tasks, still send clicks. And on many questions Google now shows an AI Overview above the other results, which draws on pages with the same clear, quotable writing. Writing for answer boxes prepares you for both.

Start with the questions you already hear

The best AEO targets are questions your customers already ask you. You do not need a tool to begin.

  1. 01

Ask your team for the 20 questions they answer most by phone, email, chat or at the counter.

  2. 02

Search each question on Google in a private browser window and note whether an answer box appears.

  3. 03

Mark the questions where a box exists and you have a page that could answer it better.

  4. 04

Pick five to start, and rewrite those pages using the chapters that follow.

Quick answers

Questions people ask

Is AEO different from SEO?

Yes, but it builds on it. SEO gets a page ranking, and AEO shapes that page so search engines can quote it in an answer box or voice reply.

Do I need special software to do AEO?

No. You can start with a list of customer questions, a private browser window and your site editor. Tracking tools help later, when you are measuring dozens of questions.

Will winning an answer box always bring more visitors?

Not always. Short factual answers can be read without a click, but you still gain visibility, and questions that need detail tend to send clicks.
