How to win the featured snippet

For marketers with pages that already rank on page one but sit below someone else's quoted answer. After reading, you can pick the right targets, match the format Google wants and give it a better block to quote.

In one paragraph

To win a featured snippet, first rank on page one for the question, then place a direct answer in the format Google already shows: a short paragraph of roughly 40 to 60 words, a numbered list or a table, right under a heading that repeats the question. Say a pet brand ranks fifth for 'how much should a puppy eat'. Adding a three-sentence answer and a simple feeding table under that exact heading gives Google a cleaner block to quote than the page holding the box today.

A featured snippet is a quoted answer from one page

A featured snippet is a block near the top of Google's results that quotes part of one page and links to it. It answers the question before the person scrolls.

Snippets come in a few shapes: a paragraph, a numbered or bulleted list, a table, and sometimes a video clip from YouTube. Google also stopped repeating the snippet's page as a separate listing on the first page of results in 2020, so the snippet replaces your normal listing rather than adding a second one. On many informational questions an AI Overview now appears above the snippet or in place of it, so the snippet is one of several answer slots, not the only one.

You almost always need to rank on page one first

Google picks snippet text from pages that already rank well for the question, so AEO starts with SEO. A page sitting on page three is very unlikely to be quoted, no matter how tidy its answer is.

The best targets are questions where you rank somewhere between second and tenth and another page holds the snippet. Your page has already passed Google's quality bar. It just needs the better answer. You can find these questions in Google Search Console, a free tool that shows the searches your pages appear for and their average position.

  • Filter Search Console queries for question words such as how, what, why, when, can and does.
  • Keep the ones where your average position is roughly 2 to 10.
  • Search each one to confirm a snippet appears and note who holds it.

Match the format Google already shows

Google has already decided what shape of answer suits each question, so copy the shape and improve the content. If the current snippet is a paragraph, write a better paragraph. If it is a list, write a cleaner list. If it is a table, build a table.

Look at what the current snippet gets wrong. It may be cut off mid-sentence, outdated, vague, or missing a number the searcher wants. Fixing that gap is your opening. For paragraph snippets, about 40 to 60 words is a common sweet spot because it fits without being cut off. For lists, keep each item to one short line.

Make your answer easy to lift

Google quotes blocks it can understand without the rest of the page, so build the answer as a self-contained unit. Put the question, or close wording of it, in a heading. Put the answer directly under that heading, before any background or story.

Write the answer in plain text on the page, not inside an image, a PDF or a slideshow. Start with the subject, not a pronoun: write 'Puppies under six months need' rather than 'They need'. Avoid phrases that point elsewhere, like 'as mentioned above'. Add depth below the answer so the page still earns its ranking.

Check monthly, because the box changes hands

Snippets are not permanent, so treat a win as something you keep, not something you own. Google tests different sources, and competitors update their pages too.

Check your target questions once a month. If you lose a snippet, compare your answer with the new one and look for what changed: a fresher date, a clearer first sentence, or a format switch from paragraph to list. Some businesses worry a snippet answers the question so fully that clicks drop. Google offers a nosnippet setting to opt out, but for most businesses the visibility is worth more than the few clicks it might save.

Quick answers

Questions people ask

How long does it take to win a featured snippet?

It varies. Once Google recrawls the updated page, changes can show within days or weeks, but a page that does not yet rank on page one will need SEO work first.

Can I mark up my page to request a snippet?

No. There is no markup that requests a featured snippet. Google chooses the text itself based on how well it answers the question.

Can two pages from my site appear in the same snippet?

No. A snippet quotes one page. Pick the page you most want people to land on and make that the clearest answer.
