How do you get cited by Perplexity?
Perplexity searches the web live for almost every question and cites the pages it uses, so getting cited means three things: PerplexityBot can crawl you, your page shows up in search for the question, and it contains a passage that answers it in a few clear sentences. Say a B2B SaaS startup wants to be cited for 'best invoicing software for agencies': a dated comparison page with a 60-word answer and a table gives Perplexity something to quote.
Perplexity can only cite what it can fetch
Start with access. Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt, and check that your CDN or firewall is not blocking AI bots. Perplexity also uses a separate agent, Perplexity-User, when a person asks it to open a specific page.
Then make the content easy to read. Key text should appear in the page's HTML rather than loading only through heavy JavaScript, and it should not sit behind a login, a cookie wall or a pop-up that hides the answer.
Write passages built to be quoted
Perplexity lifts short passages, so each important page should contain one that works on its own.
- 01
Use the question, or something close to it, as a heading.
- 02
Answer it in the first 40 to 60 words under that heading.
- 03
Include specifics: prices, dimensions, dates, locations, named features.
- 04
Use a simple table for comparisons and a numbered list for steps.
- 05
Show a last-updated date and the author or team behind the page.
Rank where Perplexity looks, including other sites
Because Perplexity builds answers from search results, ordinary SEO still matters: a page that ranks for the question is more likely to be retrieved. Fresh pages have an edge on questions where timing matters, such as prices or this year's options.
Third-party pages count too. If Perplexity tends to cite a particular review site, directory or forum for your category, being mentioned there puts you into the answer even when your own page is not the source.
Track citations over many runs
Perplexity's answers and sources change from run to run. Pick 20 questions your buyers ask, run each several times a month, and record which domains are cited and how often. A citation rate is a trend you can act on. A single screenshot is not.

Follow-up questions
Do I need to rank first in Google to be cited?
No. Ranking helps your page get retrieved, but Perplexity can cite pages further down when a passage answers the question more directly.
How quickly can a new page get cited?
Because Perplexity searches live, a page can appear within days or weeks of being crawled. There is no guarantee, so measure over a month or two before judging.
