How do you track AI traffic in Google Analytics 4?

Updated 2 min readBy Pop & Soda
Short answer

To track AI traffic in Google Analytics 4 (GA4), create a custom channel group with an AI assistants channel that matches session sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai, and place it above Referral. ChatGPT often adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to its links, which helps. A Shopify skincare brand can then compare AI visits, revenue and conversion rate side by side with organic search.

Build a channel group for AI assistants

By default, GA4 lumps visits from AI assistants into Referral, where they are easy to miss. A custom channel group gives them their own line in your reports.

  1. 01

In GA4, go to Admin, then Data display, then Channel groups.

  2. 02

Create a new channel group by copying the default one.

  3. 03

Add a new channel called AI assistants.

  4. 04

Set the condition to Session source matches regex, and enter a pattern such as chatgpt|openai|perplexity|gemini.google|copilot.microsoft|claude.ai|meta.ai|grok.

  5. 05

Move the AI assistants channel above Referral so it is matched first, then save.

  6. 06

Select the new channel group in the Traffic acquisition report.

Use a quick filter while you set things up

For a fast look, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. Change the main dimension to Session source and search for the assistant names. Adding Landing page as a secondary dimension shows which pages AI tools send people to, which hints at the questions they were answering.

Expect your numbers to undercount

Not every AI visit arrives labeled. Clicks from assistant apps or copied links often come with no referrer and land in Direct. Clicks from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are reported as ordinary Google organic traffic, not as a separate source. Treat your AI assistants channel as a floor, not a total, and watch the trend over months.

Pair visits with mention tracking

Many people read an AI answer and never click, so traffic shows only part of the picture. Track how often assistants name you for your key questions alongside the visits, and look for both rising together.

Follow-up questions

Why is my AI traffic so small?

Assistants answer many questions without a click, and some visits arrive with no referrer and are counted as Direct. A small number that grows month over month is still a meaningful signal.

Can GA4 show which question sent the visitor?

No. Assistants do not pass the person's question. The landing page is the best clue to what they asked.
