What is llms.txt and do you need one?

Updated 2 min readBy Pop & Soda
Short answer

llms.txt is a proposed plain-text file, placed at yoursite.com/llms.txt, that gives AI tools a short, curated map of your site: who you are, plus links to your most useful pages with a one-line description each. Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI proposed it in September 2024. It is not an official standard, and no major AI assistant has confirmed it relies on the file, so treat it as cheap insurance rather than a ranking lever.

The file is a short guide to your best pages

The idea is simple. Websites are full of menus, scripts and pop-ups that make it harder for a language model to find the useful parts. llms.txt hands it a clean summary instead. The proposal uses Markdown, a lightweight text format, so the file stays readable by people and machines alike.

  1. 01

Start with your business or product name as the title line.

  2. 02

Add a one-paragraph summary of what you do and for whom.

  3. 03

Group links to your key pages under short headings, such as Services, Pricing or Docs.

  4. 04

Give each link one plain sentence saying what the page covers.

  5. 05

Optionally add a section of lower-priority links that can be skipped.

It does not control access or guarantee citations

llms.txt is often confused with robots.txt, but they do different jobs. Robots.txt tells crawlers what they may visit. llms.txt only suggests what is worth reading. It cannot block a bot, and having one does not make an assistant more likely to name you.

Adoption is uneven. Developer documentation sites and software companies were early users, and some SEO tools now check for the file. Some sites also publish an llms-full.txt version containing the full text of key pages.

It is worth an hour, after the basics

Because the file is easy to write and harmless, it is reasonable to add one. A SaaS startup with 200 help articles, for instance, might list its 15 most important pages so any tool that reads the file starts in the right place. But it ranks well below the work that clearly matters: allowing the right AI crawlers, stating plain facts about your business, and earning mentions on other sites.

Follow-up questions

Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?

No. Robots.txt sets crawl permissions that major bots honor. llms.txt is an optional reading guide with no power to allow or block anything.

Will llms.txt get me into ChatGPT answers?

There is no public evidence that it does. Being named depends far more on crawlable pages, clear facts and what other sites say about you.
